English Translation
Left behind alone,
shall I be longing after you,
as through Inami's fields,
gazing on the autumn clover,
you, my dear one, pass away?
Meaning
Left behind, how I shall long for you, dear one, who will go on your way gazing at the autumn bush clover of Inami Plain.
Commentary
Book Nine Love Poems 1772

Headnote: "A poem composed by Lord Abe when Lord Ōmiwa was appointed to the province of Tsukushi"
Imagining the traveler heading to Tsukushi while gazing on the autumn bush clover of Inami Plain, the speaker laments that he, left behind, will go on longing. By picturing a lovely scene along the way, he sends the departing one off.
According to the headnote, Lord Abe composed this poem when Lord Ōmiwa was appointed to Tsukushi. Inami Plain lay in Harima (around present-day Kakogawa and Akashi, Hyōgo), on the road to Tsukushi. Its first two lines are the same as those of the preceding poem, 1771, and the two are placed together as poems of those left behind. Some identify Lord Ōmiwa here, as in the preceding poems, with Ōmiwa no Takechimaro, but there is no settled view.
Some identify Lord Abe, the author, with Abe no Hironiwa, but there is no settled view. Daibu ("lord") was a respectful term for officials of the fourth and fifth ranks.

The first line, "left behind alone," is the same as that of the preceding poem.
The second line, "shall I be longing after you," is also the same as the preceding poem, with ya answered by the attributive mu.
The third line, "as through Inami's fields," names the plain along the road. Against the preceding poem's "mountain where spring haze trails," this poem sings of an autumn plain, pairing spring and autumn.
The fourth line, "gazing on the autumn clover," pictures the traveler's view.
The final line, "you, my dear one, pass away," uses ko, an affectionate term, here for the departing Lord Ōmiwa.
