Tamakagiru yū sarikureba satsuhito no yutsuki ga take ni kasumi tanabiku

English Translation
Softly the jewel gleams
as the evening coming on;
the hunter's bow-string—
on the peak of Yutsuki
the haze is trailing along.
Meaning
As evening comes on in its soft gleaming light, a haze trails across Mount Yutsuki, whose name the hunter's bow recalls.
Commentary
Book Ten Spring Miscellaneous Poems 1816

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Spring Miscellaneous Poems"
This poem depicts the haze trailing over the peak of Yutsuki as evening falls. With two pillow words, "tamakagiru" and "satsuhito no," it adorns the faint light of evening and the name of the mountain. Just as 1812 sings the haze on Mount Kagu at dusk, this poem also catches the evening haze, and scenes of evening recur throughout this spring group from the Hitomaro Collection.
Kakinomoto no Hitomaro was a court poet of the Asuka period, active under Empress Jitō and Emperor Monmu. The left note records that this poem comes from the Kakinomoto no Hitomaro Collection, and it is uncertain whether it is Hitomaro's own work or a poem by someone else that he recorded.

The first line, "tamakagiru," is a pillow word attached to "evening." From the image of a jewel faintly glowing, it evokes the soft light of dusk.
The second line, "as evening comes on," uses "saru," meaning that time comes round, the same verb as "haru sareba" in the preceding poem.
The third line, "satsuhito no," is a pillow word attached to "bow." A "satsuhito" is a hunter, and since a hunter carries a bow, it leads into "Yutsuki," whose name begins with "yu," bow.
The fourth line, "on the peak of Yutsuki," names the mountain said to be the highest summit of the Makimuku range. Following 1813 and 1815, the poem is again set around Makimuku.
The last line, "the haze trails," ends in a near-nominal cadence, closing with the quiet scene of haze hanging over the mountain at dusk.
