English Translation
Where the haze of spring
is trailing on this day's eve,
the evening moonlight
must be shining clear and pure
over the fields of Takamatsu.
Meaning
The evening moon of this day, when the spring haze trails along, must be shining clear and pure over the fields of Takamatsu.
Commentary
Book Ten Spring Miscellaneous Poems 1874

Headnote: "On the Moon"
This poem imagines the moon that must be shining over the fields of Takamatsu on an evening when the spring haze trails, and it stands at the head of the group headed "On the Moon." Picturing the spring evening moon veiled in haze over distant fields, it imagines its faint yet pure light. After the flower group, the moon group begins, and the emblems of spring shift from daytime blossoms to the evening moon.

The first line, "spring haze," is set as the scene that softens the evening moonlight.
The second line, "trailing today," specifies this particular day.
The third line, "yūzukuyo," refers to the moon that rises in the evening, or a night when it shines.
In the fourth line, "kiyoku teruramu," "ramu" is an auxiliary of present conjecture, imagining the present scene of a place unseen.
The last line, "on the fields of Takamatsu," thought to be the fields of Takamato, names by inversion the place the moon lights.
