Haru no no ni kasumi tanabiki saku hana no kaku naru made ni awanu kimi ka mo

English Translation
In the fields of spring
the haze trails and flowers bloom—
until it's come to this,
all this while, you have not come
to meet with me, my dear one.
Meaning
The haze trails over the spring fields and the flowers are in bloom—yet even until now you have not come to meet me.
Commentary
Book Ten Spring Love Poems 1902

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through Flowers"
This poem laments a beloved who still does not come even as the season has advanced to the point where haze trails and flowers bloom over the spring fields. The progress of the season marks how long the time without meeting has been. Whereas 1894 lamented not meeting through the length of a single day, this poem does so on the longer scale of the changing season.

The first line, "in the spring fields," is hypermetric.
The second line, "haze trails," shows the deepening of spring.
The third line, "the blooming flowers," marks the season's progress.
The fourth line, "until it has come to this," refers to the season having advanced to haze and blossoms.
In the last line, "awanu kimi ka mo," "ka mo" is exclamatory, closing with a lament for the beloved who does not come.
