heading on toward Kasuga,
crosses singing by this way.

Commentary
Book Ten Summer Miscellaneous Poems 1959

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Birds"
This poem sings of the hototogisu crossing toward Kasuga, singing, together with the clouds after the rain. The clouds drifting away as the rain clears and the bird flying as if keeping them company paint a fresh early summer sky. Kasuga, sung with haze in the spring miscellaneous poems, is sung in summer as the hototogisu's destination.

The first line, "amabare no," after the rain has cleared, sets the time.
In the second line, "kumo ni taguite," "taguu" means to accompany, showing the bird flying along with the clouds.
The third line, "hototogisu," is the subject.
The fourth line, "heading for Kasuga," names the bird's destination.
In the last line, "koyu nakiwataru," "koyu" means by way of here, the same word as in the last line of 1955.
