on the meadow facing me
the wild pinks in bloom—
sad it is to see them fall;
rain, I beg you, do not fall!

Book Ten Summer Miscellaneous Poems 1970
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Flowers"
This poem grieves that the wild pinks blooming in the meadow across will be scattered by the rain, and asks the rain not to fall. Like 1870, "O spring rain, do not fall so hard; the cherry blossoms," it calls on the rain that scatters flowers not to fall, replacing the spring cherry with the summer pink.
The first line, "when I gaze out," is the same opening as 1872 and others.
The second line, "of the meadow across," shows where the flowers bloom.
The third line, "nadeshiko no," names the pink, a flower of summer and autumn loved for its delicate form.
In the fourth line, "chiramaku oshi mo," "maku" is the nominalized "mu" and "mo" is exclamatory, and the poem breaks here.
The last line, "ame na furi so ne," uses "na ... so" for prohibition and "ne" to add a plea, closing with a request that the rain not fall. The line is hypermetric.
