Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2046
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Tanabata"
This poem, worried for the Herdsman's safety, asks him to moor his boat at some landing place for a while because the autumn wind has raised waves on the river. It shows a consideration that puts the other's safety before the wish to meet. Whereas 2040 prayed that waves would not rise, this poem sings of worry after the waves have risen.
The first line, "by the autumn wind," names the cause.
In the second line, "kawanami tachinu," "nu" marks completion, and the poem breaks here.
The third line, "shimashiku wa," means for a while.
In the fourth line, "yaso no funatsu ni," "yaso" means many and "funatsu" a landing place.
In the last line, "mifune todomeyo," "mi" is an honorific prefix and "todomeyo" an imperative, closing with concern for his safety.
