Toshi ni yosou waga fune kogamu amanogawa kaze wa fuku tomo nami tatsu na yume

English Translation
Once a year adorned,
now my boat I'll row away;
the Heavenly River—
though the wind may blow its gusts,
waves, never, never rise!
Meaning
I will row my boat, which I deck out but once a year. O Heavenly River, even if the wind blows, never let your waves rise!
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2058

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Tanabata"
This poem, in the Herdsman's voice, sets out to row the boat he decks out once a year, praying that though the wind may blow, no waves will rise. It shows both the spirit of a festive once-a-year departure and a wish for a safe crossing. Like 2040 it ends with "nami tatsu na yume," so the prayer of an earthly person and the Herdsman's own wish answer each other.

The first line, "decked out once a year," is hypermetric.
In the second line, "waga fune kogamu," "mu" expresses intention, and the poem breaks here.
The third line, "the Heavenly River," is also the one addressed.
In the fourth line, "kaze wa fuku tomo," "tomo" marks a concessive supposition: even if the wind blows.
The last line, "nami tatsu na yume," is the same ending as 2040, closing with a strong plea that no waves rise.
