Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2069
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Tanabata"
This poem, in the Weaver's voice, makes offerings at every shoal of the Heavenly River, praying that the Herdsman may cross safely. Overlaying the custom of praying to the gods for a safe crossing onto the heavenly stars, it shows an earnest wish for the beloved's safety. It shares the concern for the Herdsman in 2046, as prayers for the safety of the crossing appear within the series.
The first line, "the Heavenly River," names the river dividing the stars.
In the second line, "se goto ni nusa o," "nusa" are offerings to the gods made of hemp or paper.
The third line, "tatematsuru," means to offer up.
The fourth line, "the heart that offers them," introduces the prayer.
In the last line, "sakiku kimase to," "sakiku" means safely and "mase" is an honorific imperative, closing with the prayer that he come safely.
