last year's shoals where we would cross

the road by which you'll come here,
oh, I cannot know it now.

Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2084
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Tanabata"
This poem, in the Weaver's voice, worries that last year's ford across the Heavenly River has been ruined, so she does not know the way the Herdsman will come. Whereas in 2018 the Herdsman lamented the shifting of last year's ford, this poem worries over the same change from the Weaver's side, so the two poems sing of the same situation from both stars. The length of a year apart shows in the ruin of the ford.
The first line, "the Heavenly River," names the river dividing the stars.
The second line, "last year's ford," is the same word as in 2018.
In the third line, "arenikeri," "keri" expresses realization, and the poem breaks here.
In the fourth line, "kimi ga kimasamu," "masu" is honorific and "mu" conjecture: by which you should come.
In the last line, "michi no shiranaku," "shiranaku" is the nominalized form of "shirazu": that I do not know the way. It closes with a sigh.
