bending in the autumn wind,

in the wide moors of Ada
the bush clover blossoms fall.

Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2096

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Flowers"
This poem depicts the bush clover blossoms on the wide plain of Ada scattering each time the autumn wind blows, bending the kudzu fields. It captures broadly a moving scene of autumn fields, with the autumn wind sweeping over the open plain and bush clover falling at each gust. Kudzu and bush clover, both counted among the seven flowers of autumn, are sung together in one poem.

In the first line, "makuzuhara," "ma" is a prefix: fields thick with kudzu.
The second line, "the autumn wind that bends them," names the wind.
The third line, "each time it blows," marks the recurrence.
In the fourth line, "of the wide plain of Ada," Ada is thought to be a place in Uchi District of Yamato, around present-day Gojō, Nara.
The last line, "the bush clover blossoms fall," closes with the scene of flowers falling at each gust.
