planted it, and not in vain;
going out to look,
at my home the first bush clover
has come into bloom at last!

(The first line's reading is uncertain.) Planting it was not in vain—when I went out to look, the first bush clover at my home had bloomed.
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2113

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Flowers"
This poem rejoices that, planting having proved worthwhile, the first bush clover at home has bloomed when the poet goes out to look. The first line, "手寸十名相," has long resisted a settled reading, and the source's kana line gives none, so the source's transcription is presented as it stands. The joy of seeing a bush clover one planted bloom for the first time shows in the exclamation of the last line.

The first line, "手寸十名相," has no settled reading; one theory reads it "te mo suma ni," without resting one's hands.
In the second line, "ueshi nashiruku," "shirushi" means worthwhile, taken to mean planting it was worthwhile.
The third line, "when I go out to look," names the act.
The fourth line, "the first bush clover at my home," names the year's first blossoms.
In the last line, "sakinikeru ka mo," "keri" and "ka mo" are exclamatory, closing with joy at noticing the first bloom.
