Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2127
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Flowers"
This poem laments that the bush clover planted to show the beloved when autumn came has scattered under dew and frost, and it closes the bush clover group. It shows the frustration of the flowers falling before they could be shown to the one meant to see them. It shares the feeling of 2112, which wished to show the clover to one awaited, and the bush clover group closes with a lament over fallen clover.
In the first line, "aki saraba," "saru" means that a season comes and "ba" marks a supposition: when autumn comes.
The second line, "to show my beloved," gives the purpose.
In the third line, "ueshi hagi," "shi" is the attributive of the past "ki": the clover I planted.
In the fourth line, "tsuyujimo oite," "tsuyujimo" means dew and frost, or dew frozen into frost.
In the last line, "chirinikeru ka mo," "keri" and "ka mo" are exclamatory, closing with a lament at their falling.
