In the autumn wind
flying high over the hills
the wild geese go by;
their voices fade, far away—
hidden in the clouds, it seems.

Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2136
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Wild Geese"
This poem infers from the fading voices of the geese flying over the hills on the autumn wind that they have hidden in the clouds. Like 2128 it sings of geese crossing the hills on the autumn wind, but whereas that poem saw their forms recede, this one knows where they go by their fading voices, a contrast of sight and hearing.
The first line, "on the autumn wind," is the same opening as 2128.
The second line, "flying over the hills," describes their flight.
The third line, "of the wild geese," names the birds.
The fourth line, "their voices fade," breaks the poem after the fourth line.
In the last line, "kumogakururashi," "rashi" marks grounded inference, closing by inferring from the fading voices that they have hidden in the clouds.
