Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2150
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the Calling of Deer"
This poem says that seeing the autumn bush clover scatter, the stag, heavy of heart, seems to be longing for his mate as he cries. Using the device of the deer whose wife is the bush clover grieving as it falls, it sings the same feeling as the deer's cry lamenting the fallen clover in 2144.
The first line, "the autumn bush clover," names the flower.
The second line, "seeing it scatter," names what the deer sees.
In the third line, "ōhoshimi," "ōhoshi" means gloomy and "mi" marks cause.
In the fourth line, "tsumagoi surashi," "rashi" marks grounded inference, and the poem breaks here.
In the last line, "saoshika naku mo," "mo" is exclamatory, closing with the deer's cry as the ground of the inference.
