Akihagi no chirisugiyukaba saoshika wa wabinaki semu na mizu wa tomoshimi

English Translation
Autumn bush clover,
should it scatter, fade, and pass,
then the stag, I think,
will be crying in his grief,
missing it, not seeing it.
Meaning
If the autumn bush clover scatters and is gone, the stag will surely cry in grief, lonely for the sight of it.
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2152

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the Calling of Deer"
This poem imagines that if the autumn bush clover scatters and is gone, the stag will cry in grief, lonely at not seeing it. Anticipating the sorrow of the deer whose wife is the bush clover, it resonates with 2150, where the deer cries seeing the clover fall.

The first line, "the autumn bush clover," names the flower.
In the second line, "chirisugiyukaba," "ba" marks a supposition: if it scatters and is gone.
The third line, "the stag," names the mourner.
In the fourth line, "wabinaki semu na," "wabinaki" is crying in grief and "na" an exclamatory particle. The poem breaks here.
In the last line, "mizu wa tomoshimi," "tomoshi" means lonely for and "mi" marks cause; by inversion it gives the reason for grief at the end.
