Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2155
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the Calling of Deer"
This poem depicts a stag in the fields where autumn bush clover blooms, going along crying as he grieves that the clover must fall. It shares the device of the hototogisu crying in grief for falling flowers in 1944 and 1957 of the summer poems, with the autumn deer taking the place of the seasonal bird in mourning the flowers.
The first line, "of the autumn bush clover," names the flower.
The second line, "in the fields where it blooms," is nearly the same as the second line of 2153.
The third line, "the stag," names the mourner.
The fourth line, "grieving that they must fall," gives his motive.
In the last line, "nakiyuku mono o," "mono o" is a conjunctive particle with an exclamatory sense, closing with the deer crying as he goes.
