games amid the bush clover!

Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2173
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Dew"
This poem invites companions to enjoy a pastime among the bush clover, vying with the dew, since white dew vanishes if taken in the hand. The pleasure of a refined pastime admiring bush clover in rivalry with fleeting dew comes through. Whereas the preceding poem wished to watch the dew scatter, this one leaves the fragile dew untouched and enjoys the clover instead, a contrasting attitude toward dew.
The first line, "the white dew," names the object.
In the second line, "toraba kenubeshi," "ke" means to vanish and "beshi" is conjecture: if taken, it would vanish. The poem breaks here.
The third line, "iza kodomo," come, all of you, calls to companions.
The fourth line, "vying with the dew," describes the play.
In the last line, "hagi no asobi semu," "mu" expresses intention or invitation: let us enjoy the bush clover.
