Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2180
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
This poem sings of Mount Kasuga, drenched through by the Ninth Month showers, turning color. Against the background of the belief that showers dye the trees, it captures the vividness of the rain-soaked mountain's foliage. Whereas the preceding poem asked the showers not to fall, this one sings of a mountain colored by the showers, showing that showers both scatter the leaves and dye them.
The first line, "of the Ninth Month," refers to the ninth lunar month, late autumn.
The second line, "in the showers' rain," names the rain.
The third line, "soaked through," describes the mountain.
The fourth line, "Mount Kasuga," names the mountain east of the Nara capital.
In the last line, "irozukinikeri," "keri" expresses realization, closing with wonder at the colored mountain.
