Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2197
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
This poem wonders that the mountain of Ōki has turned color though the showers have not clearly fallen. Premised on the idea that showers color the trees, it shows surprise at a mountain colored without showers. The kundoku carries a note explaining that "the mountain of Ōki" is the summit of Mount Ōno in Mikasa District of Chikuzen Province, suggesting the poem was composed near Dazaifu. Whereas the preceding poem sang of the maki colored by showers, this one sings of a mountain colored without them.
The first line, "ichishiroku," means plainly.
The second line, "the showers' rain," names the rain.
In the third line, "furanaku ni," "naku ni" is a nominalized negative with "ni": though it has not fallen.
In the fourth line, "ōki no yama wa," the mountain is thought to be Mount Ōno in Chikuzen.
In the last line, "irozukinikeri," "keri" expresses realization, closing with surprise at a mountain colored without showers.
