Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2201
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
This poem sings of autumn leaves scattering as the speaker comes over Mount Ikoma, having saddled a horse to go to a beloved. The eager heart going to meet a beloved overlaps with the beautiful scene of falling leaves seen while crossing the mountain. Like 2185, where one crossed the Ōsaka pass and saw the leaves of Mount Futakami, it sings of autumn leaves seen on a mountain crossing.
In the first line, "imogari to," "gari" means to the place of: to my beloved.
The second line, "saddling the horse," is hypermetric.
The third line, "Mount Ikoma," names the mountain on the Yamato-Kawachi border.
In the fourth line, "uchikoekureba," "uchi" is a prefix: as I come crossing.
In the last line, "momichi chiritsutsu," "tsutsu" marks continuation, closing with the scene of falling leaves on the crossing.
