As the night grows late,
showers, do not fall on them!
Autumn bush clover—
crimson of its lower leaves,
how I'd grieve to see them fall!

Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2215
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
This poem grieves that showers falling late at night will scatter the autumn color of the bush clover's lower leaves, and asks the showers not to fall. Like "shigure na furi so" in 2179, it calls on the showers that scatter autumn leaves not to fall. It also resonates with the regret for the clover's lower leaves in 2209.
In the first line, "sayo fukete," "sa" is a prefix: as the night grows late.
The second line, "shigure na furi so," uses "na ... so" for prohibition: showers, do not fall. The poem breaks here.
The third line, "of the autumn bush clover," names the plant.
In the fourth line, "motoha no momichi," "motoha" means the leaves near the root.
The last line, "chiramaku oshi mo," is the ending repeated in the group.
