the crimson leaves so early

Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2217
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
This poem, seeing the autumn leaves at the beloved's house already scattered, surmises that the showers must have drenched them. Along with thoughts of the showers that scattered the leaves early, it shows concern for the state of the beloved's house. It draws on the idea, seen in 2185 and elsewhere, that showers scatter autumn leaves.
The first line, "of your house," is hypermetric.
The second line, "the autumn leaves early," is also hypermetric.
In the third line, "chirinikeri," "keri" expresses realization, and the poem breaks here.
The fourth line, "in the showers' rain," names the cause.
In the last line, "nurenikerashi mo," "kerashi" is inference about the past and "mo" exclamatory, closing with the surmised reason for the falling.
