Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2227
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the Moon"
This poem sings of the moonlit night becoming clear after the clouds parted, though showers had unexpectedly fallen. The purity of the moon in a sky cleared after rain is captured all the more vividly. Against the moon that deepened brooding in the preceding poem, this one praises the clear moon after rain, so different feelings toward the moon stand in contrast within the group.
The first line, "unexpectedly," sets the scene.
The second line, "the showers' rain," names the rain.
In the third line, "furitaredo," "do" is adversative: though it fell.
The fourth line, "the clouds of heaven cleared," names the change.
In the last line, "tsukuyo sayakeshi," "sayakeshi" means clear and pure, closing by asserting the clarity of the moon after rain.
