Autumn bush clover
in the flowering fields, the plumes
of pampas unshown—
so I go on loving her,
my wife hidden from all eyes.

Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2285
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through Flowers"
This poem thinks of a hidden wife whom the speaker goes on loving without showing it, as the pampas grass in fields of blooming bush clover does not put forth its plumes. Deep feeling for a wife met in secret is packed into the exclamation "komorizuma wa mo." Like 2283, it uses "ho ni wa idezu" to sing of a hidden love.
The first line, "of the autumn bush clover," names the plant.
The second line, "the pampas of the flowering fields," names the grass.
The third line, "not showing in plumes," shares the sense of the fourth line of 2283, making the upper lines a figure for hidden love.
The fourth line, "I go on loving," names the love.
In the last line, "komorizuma wa mo," "komorizuma" means a wife kept hidden and "wa mo" is exclamatory.
