Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2292
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through Flowers"
This poem asks the beloved to thatch his makeshift hut with bush clover blossoms together with pampas grass cut from Akizu Plain. It shows a tender wish that the temporary lodging of a traveling beloved be adorned with beautiful autumn flowers. Whereas the makeshift hut poems of the miscellaneous poems sang of the loneliness of temporary lodging, this one sings of a heart that would make the hut beautiful.
The first line, "of Akizu Plain," names Akizu in Yoshino.
The second line, "cutting pampas grass to add," names the material.
The third line, "of the autumn bush clover," names the flowers.
In the fourth line, "hana o fukasane," "sa" is the honorific "su" and "ne" a particle of wishing: please thatch with flowers. The poem breaks here.
The last line, "on your makeshift hut," names by inversion the place to be thatched.
