Book Ten Winter Miscellaneous Poems 2314
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Winter Miscellaneous Poems"
This poem sings of soft snow streaming down from the tips of the small pines, though no clouds yet hang over the cypress forest of Makimuku. Like the preceding poem it sings of snow falling on the small pines of Makimuku, so the two continue. It sings of the cypress forest of Makimuku like "the spring haze rising over the cypress forest of Makimuku" in 1813, setting winter's soft snow against spring's haze so that the book's beginning and end echo each other.
Kakinomoto no Hitomaro was a court poet of the Asuka period, active under Empress Jitō and Emperor Monmu. The left note records that this poem comes from the Kakinomoto no Hitomaro Collection, and it is uncertain whether it is Hitomaro's own work or a poem by someone else that he recorded.
The first line, "of Makimuku," names the place.
The second line, "even the cypress forest not yet," uses the same word "hibara" as 1813.
In the third line, "kumoineba," "ne" is the perfective of the negative and "ba" gives an adversative condition: though clouds have not settled.
In the fourth line, "komatsu ga ure yu," "ure" means tips and "yu" marks the route: from the tips of the little pines. It takes up "komatsu" of the preceding poem.
The last line, "awayuki nagaru," the soft snow streams, names the snowfall.
