Book Ten Winter Miscellaneous Poems 2321
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Snow"
This poem asks the soft snow not to fall today, lamenting that there is no one to dry the wet sleeves or share the bed. The loneliness of the single life is expressed as the helplessness of having no one to dry snow-soaked sleeves. Like 2235 in the autumn miscellaneous poems, where there was no one to dry sleeves wet with showers, it sings of the loneliness of wet sleeves.
The first line, "the soft snow," is the one addressed.
The second line, "kyō wa na furi so," uses "na ... so" for prohibition: do not fall today. The poem breaks here.
The third line, "of white cloth," leads into "sleeves."
In the fourth line, "sode maki hosamu," "maku" means to pillow on: one who would pillow on and dry the sleeves.
In the last line, "hito mo aranaku ni," "naku ni" is a nominalized negative with "ni": though there is no one.
