Book Ten Winter Miscellaneous Poems 2331
Headnote: "On Autumn Leaves"
Seeing the short grass on the fields of Yata turning color, this poem infers that soft snow must be falling cold on the peaks of Mount Arachi, and its headnote is "On Autumn Leaves." It has the same composition as 2190 and 2207 in the autumn poems, which inferred distant scenes from the coloring of nearby grass; whereas those inferred autumn leaves or showers, this one infers winter snow.
The first line, "of the fields of Yata," is thought to be Yata in Yamato, and is hypermetric.
The second line, "the short grass turns color," is the same as the second line of 2190; the poem breaks here.
The third line, "Mount Arachi," names a mountain in Echizen Province, present-day Fukui.
The fourth line, "the soft snow of the peaks," names the snow.
In the last line, "samuku fururashi," "rashi" marks grounded inference.
