careless will I think of you:

the talk of every tongue

I will not love you with a careless heart, for on my account you were talked about so loudly by others.
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2535

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
Since the beloved has suffered noisy gossip from others on the speaker's account, the speaker vows never to love half-heartedly: this is a love poem. Accepting gossip as an obstacle to love, it states directly, without speaking through objects, a sense of responsibility and sincerity toward the one who has borne it.
The first line, "ōroka no," like the first line "ōnaraba" of poem 2532 in this book, denies a word meaning half-heartedness in order to show true feeling, and the two poems echo each other at close range.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.

First line, "ōroka no": "ordinary," "careless."
Second line, "kokoro wa omowaji": "I will not think with such a heart." The negative volitional auxiliary "ji" closes the statement, and the poem pauses here; what follows gives the reason in inverted order.
Third line, "waga yue ni": "because of me."
Fourth line, "hito ni kochitaku": "loudly by others." "Kochitashi" describes rumor and talk so abundant as to be troublesome.
Fifth line, "iwareshi mono o": "since you were spoken of." "Shi" is the attributive of the past auxiliary "ki," and "mono o" gives the reason with feeling, grounding the vow of the second line.
