Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2537
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
The love she has hidden even from her mother she now gives up wholly to him, come what may, to do with as he wishes: this is a woman's love poem. The secrecy of a love concealed from a mother's eyes and the reckless resolve to surrender it to the beloved are both set down frankly.
Poem 2527 in this book also sings of "the mother, milk-bestowing," portraying a woman brooding after her mother's scolding. The two poems correspond in capturing the same situation, a daughter's love under her mother's eye, in two separate scenes: being scolded by the mother, and handing over to the beloved a heart kept hidden from her.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "tarachine no": a pillow word attached to "mother."
Second line, "haha ni shiraezu": "unknown to my mother." "Shirayu" is "shiru," to know, with the passive auxiliary "yu," followed by the negative "zu."
Third line, "waga moteru": "that I hold." "Ru" is the attributive of the continuative auxiliary "ri," showing that she has long kept it in her breast.
Fourth line, "kokoro wa yoshie": "my heart, let it be." "Yoshie" expresses a reckless feeling of not caring what may happen.
Fifth line, "kimi ga manimani": "just as you will." The poem breaks off, leaving unsaid something like "I leave it to you," so that the feeling of yielding everything lingers.
