Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2555
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
The speaker asks that the morning door not be opened early, for the long-awaited beloved has come tonight. The poem expresses a woman's earnest wish that the night of a long-hoped-for meeting might last even a little longer.
The first half forbids the opening of the morning door, and the second half gives the reason. Dawn is the time when the lover departs, and opening the morning door means parting. The reluctance to let go of a night spent with the one so long awaited is packed into a few plain words.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "asato o": "the morning door." With only four syllables, it is one short of the norm.
Second line, "hayaku na ake so": "do not open it early." "Na ... so" expresses a prohibition, and the poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, "ajisawau": a pillow word attached to "me," the eyes. Its meaning and how it attaches have been explained in various ways, with no settled view.
Fourth line, "me ga horu kimi ga": "you whom I longed to see." "Me" refers to seeing or meeting, and "horu" means to desire.
Fifth line, "koyoi kimaseru": "you have come tonight." "Mase" is the honorific "masu" and "ru" is the attributive form of the continuative auxiliary "ri"; ending on the attributive form adds a note of deep feeling.
