Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2560
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
The speaker reproaches a lover who never visits, asking whether he means to let her, who lives in a desolate village where no one comes, die of longing. By referring to herself distantly as "one who dwells there," she conveys the loneliness and resentment of being neglected.
The isolation of a decayed village is layered over the pain of waiting for a lover who does not come, making this a love poem that captures well the lament of a woman left behind. The last line, "koi ni shinasuru," is a phrase common in the love poems of the Man'yoshu, which plead the pain of love as a matter of life and death.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "hito mo naki": "where no one is," depicting a lonely village that no one visits.
Second line, "furinishi sato ni": "in a village grown old." The perfective "nu" and past "ki" together express how utterly desolate it has become.
Third line, "aru hito o": "the one who lives there." The speaker refers to herself as if she were someone else.
Fourth line, "meguku ya kimi ga": "pitiably, will you." "Meguku" is the continuative form of the adjective "megushi," and the particle "ya" poses a question.
Fifth line, "koi ni shinasuru": "let her die of longing." Answering "ya" in the fourth line, it closes with "suru," the attributive form of the causative auxiliary "su," a kakari-musubi construction.
