have given even my heart,
what is there, my love,
that, unsaid, I'd claim was said,
and so seek to hide from you?

Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2573
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
She would never falsely claim to have said what she had not said to someone to whom she has given even her heart: in this poem a woman insists on her own sincerity. Doubted perhaps over some misunderstanding, she declares that she hides nothing from the one to whom she has entrusted body and soul.
It belongs to the category "Expressing One's Feelings Directly." The opening "kokoro sae," "even my heart," conveys complete trust in the beloved, the heart given along with everything else.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather the love poems of people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "kokoro sae": "even my heart." The particle "sae" adds one thing to another, meaning not only the body but the heart too.
Second line, "matsureru kimi ni": "to you, to whom I have offered." "Matsuru" is a humble verb for giving, followed by the attributive form of the perfective auxiliary "ri."
Third line, "nani o ka mo": "what?" The particle "ka" with the exclamatory "mo" expresses a rhetorical question.
Fourth line, "iwazu iishi to": "that I said what I did not say." It describes covering up something with words that differ from the facts.
Fifth line, "waga nusumawamu": "would I deceive you? Never." It closes in the attributive of the auxiliary "mu" in agreement with "ka" in the third line, forming a rhetorical question.
