Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2601
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
A woman voices the surprise and joy of meeting an old acquaintance in an unexpected place, saying she never imagined it either awake or in a dream. The exaggeration that sets waking life beside dreams powerfully conveys the emotion of a reunion with someone long unseen.
Following the run of poems about dreams, this poem too uses the word "dream," but makes use of the contrast between dream and reality: something not even dreamed of has happened in waking life. "Furitaru kimi" is usually taken as "you whom I have long known," though some read it as "you who have grown older."
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "utsutsu ni mo": "in waking life too." "Utsutsu" is the waking world, paired with "dream" in the next line.
Second line, "ime ni mo ware wa": "nor in dreams did I." It repeats the "ni mo" of the first line, leading to the strong denial: neither awake nor dreaming.
Third line, "omowazuki": "did not think." "Ki" is the past auxiliary, and the sense breaks after the third line. The lower half states what she did not think, in an inverted structure.
Fourth line, "furitaru kimi ni": "you, my old companion." "Furu" means to pass through years, showing that the two had long been apart.
Fifth line, "koko ni awamu to wa": "that I would meet you here." The line has one syllable too many and closes the poem with the surprise of an unexpected reunion.
