Kono yama no mine ni chikashi to wa ga mitsuru tsuki no sora naru koi mo suru kamo

English Translation
Close to the summit
of this mountain I saw it,
the moon in the sky;
so my heart is in the sky
with such a love I now feel
Meaning
As the moon I saw close to the peak of this mountain hangs in the sky, so my heart is up in the air with a restless love.
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2672

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Feelings through Things"
Like the moon that seemed close to the mountain peak yet floats in the sky, the speaker's heart is unsettled and up in the air with love. Playing on "sora" as both the sky where the moon hangs and a heart adrift, the poem entrusts to the moon the state of one carried away by love.
This is one of the poems on the moon. Its final line "koi mo suru kamo" appears in the same form in poem 2675; both describe a scene in a preface and close with "such a love I feel."
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.

First line, "kono yama no": "of this mountain," pointing to the mountain before the speaker's eyes as an actual scene.
Second line, "mine ni chikashi to": "close to the peak." The particle "to" marks what appeared so to the speaker's eyes.
Third line, "wa ga mitsuru": "that I saw." The attributive "tsuru" of the perfective "tsu" modifies "moon," and the lines through "tsuki no" in the fourth line form a preface.
Fourth line, "tsuki no sora naru": "as the moon is in the sky, my heart is restless." "Sora" means both the sky and a heart unsettled, and here the poem turns from the preface to its true theme.
Fifth line, "koi mo suru kamo": "such a love I feel." The exclamatory "kamo" conveys wonder at having fallen into so restless a love.
