Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2691
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Feelings through Things"
I will stop fretting this way and that, and leave this self, fragile as morning dew, wholly to you: so a woman gives herself into her lover's keeping. The poem holds together a clean resolve to cut off doubt and entrust everything to him, and the forlornness of one who knows how fleeting she is.
This closes the sequence on dew and, like poem 2689, speaks of "morning dew" and "this body of mine." There the woman vowed to grow young again and wait; here she says she will leave herself entirely to him, treating from another angle how a fleeting life should be lived. Against the hesitating woman of the preceding poem, the woman here has made up her mind, a further contrast.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather the love poems of people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "kanikaku ni": "this way and that," expressing a mind wavering in many directions.
Second line, "mono wa omowaji": "I will not brood." "Ji" is the negative volitional auxiliary, and the poem pauses here.
Third line, "asatsuyu no": "like the morning dew," an image describing the self as fleeting and quick to vanish.
Fourth line, "agami hitotsu wa": "this one body of mine." "Hitotsu" stresses a self with nothing else to rely on, and "wa" sets it apart.
Fifth line, "kimi ga manimani": "as you will." Manimani is a noun meaning to follow another's will or the course of things; ending on it without a verb leaves the sense of surrender lingering.
