Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2698
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Feelings through Things"
Though I have just gone and seen it, once back I cannot stop longing for Asaka Lagoon, which I have left beyond the mountains, and I cannot sleep: so this poem says. The beloved who lives there is overlaid upon Asaka Lagoon, and the poem captures the ache of sleepless nights thinking of someone cut off by mountains.
Following the poems on Mount Fuji, a row of poems tied to places begins here: Asaka Lagoon, Ada, and the Asuka River. Asaka Lagoon is thought to be the shore of Asaka at Sumiyoshi in Settsu, in the area of present-day Sakai in Osaka Prefecture.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather the love poems of people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "yukite mite": "having gone and seen." The visit to the beloved is expressed as going to see Asaka Lagoon.
Second line, "kureba kōshiki": "on coming back I long for it." "Kohoshi" is an older form of "koishi," expressing a longing that grows the more for having just seen.
Third line, "asakagata": a place name, taken to be the shore of Asaka at Sumiyoshi in Settsu. It is where the beloved lives, and the beloved herself is overlaid upon it.
Fourth line, "yamagoshi ni okite": "leaving it beyond the mountains." This line has eight syllables, a hypermetric line conveying the distance of the hills that lie between.
Fifth line, "inekatenu kamo": "I cannot sleep." "I" means sleep, "kate" is the irrealis of "katsu," to be able, "nu" the attributive of the negative "zu," and "kamo" closes with a sigh.
