tell my darling that I'm here

Into Wazami Moor, named like the ring on the hat cord of my dear wife, I have now come; I pray someone will tell my wife.
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2722

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Feelings through Things"
A man reaching Wazami Moor on a journey asks that word be sent to his wife waiting at home that he has come this far. It is a travel poem of longing for a distant wife, and by calling up the place name from her hat, an everyday object close to her, it shows a heart that does not forget her even on the road.
The poem expresses feelings through the wife's hat and has the character of a travel poem, thinking of the wife at home. Wazami Moor is thought to be a plain in Fuwa District of Mino Province, near present-day Sekigahara in Gifu Prefecture; under the name Wazami-ga-hara it also appears in poem 199 of Book Two, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro's elegy for Prince Takechi.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not been handed down.

First line, "wagimoko ga": "of my dear wife."
Second line, "kasa no karite no": "of the karite of her hat." "Karite" is thought to be the ring through which the hat cord passes, though this is uncertain. The lines up to here form a preface, thought to lead through the sound of "wa" (ring) to "Wazamino" in the third line.
Third line, "wazamino ni": "into Wazami Moor," a plain thought to lie near Sekigahara in Mino Province.
Fourth line, "ware wa irinu to": "that I have entered." The perfective auxiliary "nu" shows how far the journey has come.
Fifth line, "imo ni tsugekoso": "please tell my wife." "Koso" is a particle expressing a wish directed at another, asking someone to carry word to the wife.
