Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2771

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Feelings through Things"
Counting on his beloved's sleeves to shelter him from rain and dew, he has come without even a hat of the little sedge of Mano Bay. The poem charmingly conveys both the eagerness of a man who rushed to see her so fast he forgot his hat and his fond wish to be wrapped in her sleeves.
It is a poem on little sedge, and the next poem, 2772, also speaks of sewing the sedge of Mano into a hat, so two poems using the same material from the same place stand side by side. Where this poem says he came to her without a hat, the next laments that rumor spreads before the sedge is even sewn into a hat, carrying the conceit of the hat forward.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather the love poems of people whose names have not come down to us.

First line, "wagimoko ga": "of my dear beloved." "Wagimoko" is a man's affectionate word for his lover or wife, marking the poem as a man's.
Second line, "sode o tanomite": "trusting in her sleeves," expressing the fond wish to be covered by the woman's sleeves.
Third line, "mano no ura no": a place name, Mano Bay in Settsu Province, thought to be near present-day Nagata Ward in Kobe, known for its sedge. The line runs to six syllables.
Fourth line, "kosuge no kasa o": "a hat woven of little sedge." "Ko" is a prefix, and a sedge hat was worn against rain and sun.
Fifth line, "kizute kinikeri": "I have come without wearing it." "Zute" is the negative "zu" with "te," "ni" marks completion, and "keri" a dawning realization.
