Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts Directly 2888
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts Directly"
The poet pleads that the words "I missed you" not be taken as the clichés people commonly utter. It carries a frank wish that the beloved believe the truth of those words.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "yo no naka no," means "of the world at large."
Line two, "hito no kotoba to," means "as the words people habitually say."
Line three, "omohosu na," means "please do not think," the honorific "omohosu" with the prohibitive "na." The poem pauses here.
Line four, "makoto zo koishi," means "truly I longed for you," with "zo" stressing the truth.
Line five, "awanu hi o ōmi," means "because the days apart were many," with "mi" expressing cause.
