Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts Directly 2912
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts Directly"
The poet promises to visit tonight in a dream, where there is no need to fear watching eyes, and asks the beloved not to lock the door. The idea of worrying about a locked door even for a dream visit combines humor with earnestness.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "hito no mite," means "when people see." Poem 2958 in this book opens with the same upper lines, "hito no mite kototogame senu ime ni dani."
Line two, "kototogame senu," means "do not reproach with words."
Line three, "ime ni ware," means "in a dream, I."
Line four, "koyoi itaramu," means "tonight I will come to you," and the poem pauses here.
Line five, "yado sasu na yume": "na" is prohibitive and "yume" means "by no means," insisting that the door not be barred against a dream visit.
