ただ今日も君には逢はめど人言を
繁み逢はずて恋ひわたるかも
Roma-ji

Tada kyō mo kimi ni wa awamedo hitogoto o shigemi awazute koiwataru kamo

English Translation
Even today
I would gladly meet with you,
but people's talk
is thick, so without meeting
I go on longing still
Meaning
I would see you even today, but because the gossip is so thick, I go on longing without meeting you.

Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts Directly 2923

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts Directly"
A woman laments that, though she would meet her lover today, fear of gossip keeps her longing without meeting. Her heart, torn between desire to meet and fear of others' eyes, is frankly expressed.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "tada kyō mo," means "even today."
Line two, "kimi ni wa awamedo," means "though I would meet you."
Line three, "hitogoto o," means "the gossip."
Line four, "shigemi awazute," means "because it is thick, without meeting."
Line five, "koiwataru kamo," means "I go on longing."
