Kokoro ni wa moete omoedo utsusemi no hitome o shigemi imo ni awanu kamo

English Translation
Within my heart
I burn with thoughts of you,
but in this world
the eyes of people are so many
I cannot meet my love
Meaning
In my heart I burn with love, but because the eyes of the world are everywhere, I cannot meet my beloved.
Commentary
Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts Directly 2932

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts Directly"
The poet laments that, though love burns within, too many watching eyes prevent a meeting. Inner fire and outer watching eyes are contrasted, in the same structure as poem 2910 in this book.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "kokoro ni wa," means "in my heart," the same opening as poem 2910 in this book.
Line two, "moete omoedo," means "though I burn with love," likening love to fire.
Line three, "utsusemi no," means "of this world," a pillow word for "hitome," people's eyes.
Line four, "hitome o shigemi," means "because there are so many eyes."
Line five, "imo ni awanu kamo," means "I do not meet her," the same final line as poem 2910.
