Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts Directly 2955
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts Directly"
A woman's heart is thrown into confusion, wondering if it is a dream, when word unexpectedly arrives from a man who had stayed away for months. Surprise and joy at the long-awaited message are expressed as bewilderment.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "ime ka to," means "thinking it a dream," a short line of four syllables.
Line two, "kokoro madoinu," means "my heart was confused," and the poem pauses here.
Line three, "tsuki maneku," means "for many months."
Line four, "karenishi kimi ga," means "of you who had grown distant."
Line five, "koto no kayoeba," means "since your words have reached me," showing surprise and joy at an unexpected message.
