Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts Directly 2957
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts Directly"
Realizing they will no longer meet in reality, the poet asks the beloved to stay by the bed and appear in dreams. A heart that has given up on real meetings entrusts its hope to dreams.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "ima yori wa," means "from now on," the same opening as poem 2954 in this book.
Line two, "kou tomo imo ni," means "even if I long for her."
Line three, "awame ya mo," is a rhetorical question, "will I meet her? No." The poem pauses here.
Line four, "toko no he sarazu," means "never leaving my bedside."
Line five, "ime ni mie koso," means "please appear in my dreams," the same final line as poem 2842 in this book.
