Akakinu no hitaura no kinu nagaku hori aga omou kimi ga mienu koro kamo

English Translation
Like a robe of red silk
lined throughout with the same,
long, long I wish it,
yet the one I love so dearly
has not been seen of late
Meaning
Like a robe of red silk lined with the same cloth, I wish our love to last long, yet these days the one I love has not come to see me.
Commentary
Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 2972

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
A woman is anxious that the one she hopes to be with forever has not come to see her lately. The luxurious robe described in the first two lines suggests the depth of her feelings.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "akakinu no," means "of red silk."
Line two, "hitaura no kinu," is a robe lined with the same cloth as its outside; with line one it forms an introduction leading to "nagaku," long, though how it connects is debated.
Line three, "nagaku hori," means "wishing it to last long."
Line four, "aga omou kimi ga," means "the one I love."
Line five, "mienu koro kamo," means "has not appeared of late." Poem 3068 in this book ends with the same line.
