Au yoshi no idekuru made wa tatamikomo hedate amu kazu ime ni shi miemu

English Translation
Until the day
there comes a way to meet,
as many times
as the rushes woven in a mat,
I will come to you in dreams
Meaning
Until a way to meet appears, I will come to you in your dreams as many times as there are stitches in a woven rush mat.
Commentary
Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 2995

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet promises the beloved to appear in dreams as many times as there are stitches in a rush mat until a way to meet is found. The everyday image of a mat's weave conveys how often the dream visits will come.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "au yoshi no," means "a way to meet."
Line two, "idekuru made wa," means "until it appears."
Line three, "tatamikomo," is a rush mat used as a floor covering, here used for the number of its stitches.
Line four, "hedate amu kazu," means "as many as the stitches woven apart."
Line five, "ime ni shi miemu," means "I will appear in dreams," promising to visit the beloved's dreams many times.
