English Translation
Like Notose River
flowing by the high rapids,
later we shall meet,
my darling girl and I,
even if it is not now
Meaning
Like the Notose River by the high rapids, I will meet my beloved later on, even if it cannot be now.
Commentary
Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3018

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
Leading from the sound "noto" of the Notose River to "nochi," later, the poet resolves to meet the beloved one day even if not now. Accepting the present separation, the poem holds on to hope for the future.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "takase naru," means "at Takase," taken to be a place name whose location is debated.
Line two, "Notose no kawa no," means "of the Notose River," forming an introduction leading through the sound "noto" to "nochi," later.
Line three, "nochi mo awamu," means "later we shall meet," a hypermetric line of six syllables.
Line four, "imo ni wa ware wa," means "I, with my beloved."
Line five, "ima ni arazu tomo," means "even if not now," showing resolve to meet one day though not at present.
