Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3020
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet is pained because people do not speak well of the beloved. Using an introduction that leads from the sound of Yoruka Pond to "yoroshiku," well, it voices concern over the beloved's reputation.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "Ikaruga no," refers to the area of Ikaruga in Nara Prefecture.
Line two, "Yoruka no ike no," is taken to be a pond at Ikaruga, forming an introduction that leads through the sound "yoruka" to "yoroshiku."
Line three, "yoroshiku mo," means "favorably, well."
Line four, "kimi o iwaneba," means "since people do not speak well of you."
Line five, "omoi zo waga suru," means "I am troubled," with "zo" concluded by the attributive "suru." The poet is pained by the beloved's poor reputation.
